The theme of our June issue is “Diagnostic Strategies,” and includes a feature article by Bernie Thompson on the use of in-cylinder pressure testing. You won't find a question like this one on any ASE test (yet), but the technique is so valuable that we wanted to pique your interest if the concept is still new to you. You can find all the info you need to answer this question in the AutoPro Workshop!

In-cylinder pressure testing is done with a pressure transducer and digital storage oscilloscope, and can be performed as both a cranking test and as a running test. All of the following faults can be diagnosed by observing a running in-cylinder pressure test

  1. jumped timing belt
  2. overly rich fuel mixture
  3. retarded ignition timing
  4. inoperative variable valve timing

Take the test, then see how you compare to techs from around the country. Don't forget to click on the answer link for a PDF explanation or to register for the free prize drawing from our partner, Federated Auto Parts!
