OIG: Improved oversight of standalone compounding pharmacies needed

Compounding pharmacies providing medications to hospitals need better oversight, according to a new report from the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General (OIG). The OIG decided to take a look at the issue after the 2012 nationwide meningitis outbreak was found to be caused by a standalone compounding pharmacy that produced contaminated steroids for injection.
