Children on public insurance denied access to, or wait longer for, specialty care

Evidence from a new study suggests that children covered by Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are less likely to receive outpatient specialty care than children covered by private health insurance and are more likely to wait longer times for appointments. Outpatient youths routinely use ED
for care during psychiatric events

Nonsuicidal, nonpsychotic children already receiving care at mental health clinics as outpatients are turning to hospital emergency departments (EDs) for care for emotional and behavioral problems. Read full article.

Tonsil, appendix removal before age 20 associated with premature MI

Patients who have tonsillectomy or appendectomy before 20 years of age appear to be at increased relative risk for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) 15 to 20 years later, according to a recent study. Read full article.

Disparities in bottled water use, beliefs could have health consequences for children

A cross-sectional survey found that African American and Latino parents are more likely than non-Latino whites to give their children bottled water, largely because of differences in beliefs and perceptions about drinking water. Read full article.

DASH-style diet may help prevent excess weight gain in adolescents

In a longitudinal cohort study, adolescent girls who ate a diet high in fruits, whole grains, and low-fat diary products had smaller gains in body mass index (BMI) over 10 years than girls with other dietary patterns. Read full article.
