Featured Application Note:
Quantitation of Metabolites in Plasma Samples by UV-MS Correction Using a Dual-cell - Linear Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer
Tim Stratton, Yingying Huang, August Specht, Julie Horner, Thermo Fisher Scientific

The quantitative assessment of metabolites in samples from development in vivo studies has become an area of increasing study with the release of guidances from regulatory bodies (MIST and M3 R2) and their subsequent interpretation and implementation. The goal of this application is to quantify the desmethyl metabolites of dextromethorphan in plasma using a UV-MS correlation established through a standard curve generated in vitro.

HPLC

Analysis of Bisphenol A leaching from baby feeding bottles
Syed Salman Lateef, Agilent Technologies

A UHPLC method to quantify bisphenol A in baby bottles showed narrower peak widths, higher peak heights, better resolution and improved signal-to-noise ratio compared to an HPLC method.

Automated Solid Phase Extraction of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (AB 8270 SIM) in Water
Phil Bassignani, FMS, Inc.

EPA Method 8270 is used to determine the concentration of semi-volatile organic compounds in extracts prepared from solid waste matrices such as soils, air sampling media and water samples. Extractions from water samples can be particularly difficult and time consuming due to the problematic analytes that need to be extracted, concentrated and analyzed as well as the large quantities of solvent the manual sample prep process requires. Laboratories are required to report analytes at lower reporting limits than previously required, often needing to employ SIM scan variations of the method. The following application outlines the complete automation of a modified 8270 extraction, delivering a complete, out-of-the box MDL study demonstrating both precision and accuracy for mixed classes of low-level analytes.
Testosterone /Androstenedione using SLE+
Kerry Stephens, Mark Purcell, Biotage AB, Sweden

This application note outlines a fast, high throughput sample preparation technique for the extraction of testosterone and androstenedione  that eliminates matrix interferences from serum allowing for LC-MS-MS detection of the target analytes at a concentration of <1 nmol/L.
Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Seafood Using GC/MS
Don Shelly and Craig A Perman, UCT, Inc

This method is used for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in fish and seafood--oyster, shrimp and mussel. Benzo[a]pyrene is the primary analyte of interest. GC/MS instrumentation is used for analysis.
UPLC Determination Of Diquat And Paraquat In Drinking Water
Kim Van Tran, Jeremy C. Shia, and Michael S. Young, Waters Corporation

Paraquat and diquat are quaternary ammonium herbicides used in great quantities worldwide for defoliation and weed control. This application note describes an optimized method for determination of paraquat and diquat in drinking water using an Oasis® WCX cartridge for SPE prior to fast and sensi¬tive UPLC/MS(MS) analysis.

GPC
GPC/SEC-MALLS analysis of Hyaluronic Acid
Günter Reinhold and Friedhelm Gores, PSS Polymer Standards Service GmbH

GPC/SEC is the method of choice for measuring the molar mass distribution of hyaluronic acid. True molar masses can be obtained when on-line multi-angle light-scattering is used in combination with a refractive index detector.
Low Molecular Weight Heparin
Lin Rao and John Beirne, Wyatt Technology

A SEC/MALS method is proposed in place of the SEC/UV-RI method currently required by the EP monograph. This would result in a faster run time because it obviates the need for column calibration and calibration standards.
