Featured Application Note:
Rapid Screening of Dietary Supplements with Direct Analysis ID-CUBE Coupled to an Exactive Mass Spectrometer
Elizabeth Crawford,IonSense, Inc. and Maciej Bromirski, Thermo Fisher Scientific

This application note uses the analysis of herbal weight loss aids and omega fatty acid dietary supplements to test the performance and utility of a new Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART®) ambient ionization source.

Addressing Concerns in QC Tests for GC Columns
Walt Jennings, Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Davis, and Ken Lynam, Applications Chemist with Agilent Technologies

This app note describes a rigorous QC column testing approach that employs active tests probes to verify the inertness performance of modern GC capillary columns. It explains this testing approach using specific examples from the Agilent J&W family of Ultra Inert GC columns.

GPC
GPC/SEC–MALLS Study of Protein Denaturation
Thorsten Hofe, PSS Polymer Standards Service GmbH

GPC/SEC-MALLS is a powerful tool to detect and follow the transition of protein structures. GPC/SEC allows the separation of the associates (dimer, trimer, etc.). Absolute molar masses can be detected for various structures, quantification is done using the concentration detector.
Characterization of PLGA with SEC-MALS-VIS
Stepan Podzimek, Synpo

The characterization of PLGA by means of conventional size exclusion chromatography (SEC) is problematic because of the lack of suitable calibration standards. In this note, we show the benefits of using SEC-multi-angle light scattering (MALS) and viscometry to the absolute characterization of PLGA.

Automated Solid Phase Extraction and Concentration for the Determination of Nitrosamines in Drinking Water
Phillip Bassignani, FMS, Inc.

Nitrosamines are a group of chemical compounds regulated due to their carcinogenic characteristics. Nitrosamines have many sources including widespread usage in the manufacturing of rubber products, as well as cosmetics. They have also been demonstrated to form from reactions between food preservatives and amines. In drinking water, established limits are low (<1 ng/L), requiring detection by a Mass Spectrometer in the chemical ionization mode.
Determination of Pesticides in Red Wine by QuEChERS Extraction, Quick QuEChERS Clean-up, and LC/MS/MS Detection
Xiaoyan Wang and Don Shelly, UCT, Inc.

Red wine contains pigments such as anthocyanins, and a mixture of organic acids, sugars and phenols. This complex matrix presents an analytical challenge for the determination of trace pesticide residues. Use of the UCT Quick QuEChERS push thru cartridge ECPURMPSMC after QuEChERS extraction provides a simple, fast, novel, and effective method for clean-up. Extraction of EtS and EtG on EVOLUTE AX
Rhys Jones and Dr Lee Williams, Biotage

This application note demonstrates the simultaneous extraction of both EtG and EtS in the same assay. This protocol demonstrates a significant improvement over the established ‘dilute and shoot’ approach, increasing signal and reducing downtime on the LC/MS/MS. Recoveries for EtG range from 90-105% and 80-103% for EtS across two formats of EVOLUTE AX columns with RSDs <10%.

Application of Rapid Micro-Chamber Tests
(ISO 12219-3) for Screening Chemical Emissions from Plastic Car Trim Components

Caroline Widdowson and Paul Morris, Markes International Ltd.

“New car smell”, although popular, is due in large part to the undesirable release of chemicals from car interior materials. Emitted VOCs and SVOCs such as benzene, formaldehyde, and phthalates may have a detrimental impact on vehicle interior air quality (VIAQ), and in extreme cases may pose a risk to the health of occupants. The reproducibility data presented in this study proves the suitability of micro-chambers for evaluating emissions of monomers and other volatiles from plastics.
Determination of Spice in urine
Martin Sibum, Spark Holland b.v.

This application note describes the development of an application for the determination of 5 Spice compounds in spiked urine. After the development of the application calibration curves and quality control standards are measured.

HPLC
6500 System for High Sensitivity Bioanalysis
Anthony Romanelli, Loren Olson, Tom Biesenthal, and Hesham Ghobarah, AB SCIEX

The new AB SCIEX 6500 series delivers ultra-high sensitivity with LOQs below 1 pg/mL.  And with the IonDrive™ technology, major new innovations in ion generation, transmission, and detection have been implemented providing an unprecedented level of performance.

Single-Run Assay and Impurity Testing of Fixed-Dose Combination Drugs Using the Agilent 1200 Infinity Series High Dynamic Range Diode Array Detector Solution
Angelica Gratzfeld-Huesgen, Agilent Technologies

With the 1290 Infinity HDR DAD the determination of low and high dose drugs present in a fixed dose combination drug was possible in one run, due to the increased linear dynamic range by >30x.

Broad Spectrum in Sun Care Products
Nonie Danna, PerkinElmer, Inc.

This application note analyzes “broad spectrum” UVA and UVB components in sun care products for compliance with new FDA regulations.

Fast Screening Methods for Beta Blockers by HPLC with Agilent Poroshell 120 Columns
Bill Long, Agilent Technologies

The Agilent Poroshell 120 column family is expanding to seven phases.  This application evaluates how selectivity of a separation of beta blockers is changed by using different bonded phases, including C18, C8, polar-embedded phases and phenyl bonded phases to separate steroids.

Analysis of Mycotoxin Patulin in Apple Juice
Padmaja Prabhu, PerkinElmer, Inc.

This application note will demonstrate a rapid method for the identification and quantification of patulin in apple juice using high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. In addition to method optimization and standard analysis, a number of apple juice samples for patulin were analyzed.
