Understanding Antibody and Viral Glycoprotein Interactions Using CG-MALS
Kathryn M. Hastie and Erica Ollmann Saphire, Wyatt Technology
Viral glycoproteins are often the only antigen found on the viral surface, and are therefore key targets for neutralizing antibodies. Analyzing the type and affinity of the different molecular interactions that can occur is essential for understanding what makes a good neutralizing antibody and how these interactions can be utilized in post-exposure treatments as well as vaccine development.

Characterization of Hydrodynamic Changes On Cation-Binding to Proteins
Malvern Instruments
The specific interactions of cations with highly charged residues allow them to induce significant conformational changes on their binding proteins. The protein conformational changes induced by cation binding may be very large, and in several cases appear to account for the complete folding of a protein and for the triggering of its oligomerization. These properties, which are essential for their function, can be studied with triple detection size-exclusion chromatography (SEC-TD) in combination with Analytical Ultracentrifugation (AUC). The Analysis of Chlorinated Dioxins, Difurans, and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Edible Oils
Phillip Bassignani, FMS, Inc.
The dioxin family consists of 210 compounds, of which 17 contain the 2,3,7,8 pattern of chlorination. These 2,3,7,8-containing compounds are of extreme concern to human health because of their high level of toxicity. Approximately, 12 of the 209 polychlorinated biphenyls have also been identified as human toxins. For this reason, the US FDA and EU have established strict regulations for the monitoring of food products for human consumption, in particular edible oils. Manual extractions of oils can be a time-consuming procedure often delaying lab turnaround times. By automating the process with the PowerPrep®, food oil samples can be reliably processed with routine 24 h turnaround times.

The Application of QuEChERS in the Extraction of Anabolic Steroids in Whole Blood
Xiaoyan Wang, UCT, Inc
Anabolic steroids are drugs structurally related to the cyclic steroid ring system and behave similarly to testosterone in the body. They are used therapeutically to stimulate muscle growth and appetite, induce male puberty, and treat chronic wasting conditions. Ergogenic uses include bodybuilding, sport doping, and animal fattening. This application utilizes the original non-buffered QuEChERS technique to extract and quantify anabolic steroids in whole blood.

Pesticide Analysis by LC–MS–MS
Barry Whatmore, Advanced Chromatography Technologies Limited
This application shows the separation of more than 40 pesticides by LC–MS–MS using an ACE UltraCore SuperC18 solid-core particle column. The ultra-high efficiency of the ACE UltraCore column shows separation of a number of closely related isomers including Dimethomorphs and Cyproconazoles. ACE UltraCore SuperC18 columns are ideal for LC–MS and LC–MS–MS applications.
