The LCGC Blog: Responsible Unconventional Oil and Gas Exploration in Colombia
LCGC Blogger Kevin Schug was invited to participate in a forum, “Questions and Answers on Fracking”, hosted jointly by the Colombian government, oil and gas industry, and national media to further a national conversation regarding the plan for Colombia to proceed with extraction of unconventional natural resources. A program was formulated to help educate public opinion leaders on the fundamentals of unconventional natural gas and oil extraction, to convey the current state of research on the topic, and to disseminate and discuss prospective regulations that have been formulated over the past two to three years.

LCGC TV: Gérard Hopfgartner on Advances in Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry
In the first video update to LCGC TV of 2015, Gérard Hopfgartner from the University of Geneva, University of Lausanne, Switzerland, discusses the advances in ion mobility mass spectrometry, highlighting the benefits of the technique and how it can be hyphenated to both 1D and 2D LC.
Sample Prep Perspectives: Understanding and Improving Solid-Phase Extraction
In this instalment of "Sample Prep Perspectives", some of the basic scientific principles behind solid-phase extraction (SPE) to allow the correct mode of extraction to be selected through an understanding of how analytes interact with and are separated by the sorbent are discussed.
Micro-SPE Glycopeptide/Glycan  Isolation
New! ERLIC-WAX chemistry addresses multi-phosphorylated peptide, glycopeptide and glycan isolation challenges. Desalting with TARGA® C18, UltraMicroSpin™ SPE, even from 100% water, can improve recovery of these polar molecules prior to LCMS. Try one of our ERLIC WAX & TARGA C18 approaches today! News: Speeding Up Drug Metabolism Screening
A recent study published in the journal Analytical Chemistry presents a drug metabolism strategy based on microsome mesoporous organosilica nanoreactors coupled with high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS) to screen for potential drug toxicity.

HPLC Extra Column Volumes
It is of particular importance to reduce extra column volumes when using small volume columns or UHPLC. However, where do these extra column volumes come from, how can they be minimized, and what effect do they have on chromatography?
