The LCGC Blog: Nontraditional Research Funding: More than One Way to Skin a Cat

As I wrote the title of this month's installment, I could not help but wonder where the cliché "more than one way to skin a cat" came from. Turns out it is from Mark Twain in his 1889 work, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. I have never read that book, but I certainly have heard this saying used more than once—even if it might offend some cat lovers. Of course, it means simply that there is more than one way to do something. Read more

VICI mini PDD/HID

The VICI miniPDD (PDHID) uses about one fifth (20%) the amount of helium as the current versions, giving up only a bit of sensitivity and dynamic range. It is approximately one half the size of the D-4 series, but has nearly the same sensitivity — about 100 ppb for fixed gases. It is particularly well suited where the high cost of helium becomes a consideration. Learn more

LCGC TV: Are Ionic Liquid SPME Coatings Robust Enough for Harsh GC Conditions?

Ionic-liquid-based SPME coatings need to be capable of withstanding some harsh conditions in GC and GC–MS analyses, such as high salt content, extremes of pH, and high desorption temperatures. Jared Anderson from the Iowa State University explains how he has been working to address these limitations within the analyses. Read more
