LC Troubleshooting: How Does it Work? Part 1: Pumps
Understanding how liquid chromatographic pumps operate can help streamline solving pump problems. This month's “LC Troubleshooting” considers the history of pump development, and describes the two most common pump designs in use today and the problems that can affect them.
A Low Solvent Extraction and Clean Up for POPs analysis
A newly developed automated sample extraction and cleanup system, the Total Rapid EconoPrep®, allows for fastest sample extraction, cleanup, and concentration for the analysis of dioxins, PCBs, and PDBEs (2 h). Solvent consumption is limited to 150–200 mL and no dichloromethane is used during the cleanup step. The application note discusses sample turnaround times of only a few hours providing excellent results and same-day analysis. Learn more

The coupling of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ion mobility spectrometry hyphenated to mass spectrometry (IMS-MS). Tim Causon and Stephan Hann of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria, spoke to LCGC about their work evaluating this approach and exploring its possibilities for metabolomics.

Top-Down Protein Quantitation on a Triple-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer
Top-down protein quantitation, especially using triple-quadrupole MS, but even in general, has hardly been pursued. To help fill this gap, we recently reported a systematic investigation of intact-protein quantitation using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) on a triple-quadrupole MS system, and we believe that this approach can be a promising alternative route to consider going forward.

LCGC TV: Customizing SPME Coatings for Individual Analytes
Most SPME sorbent coatings are broadly selective. Jared Anderson from the Iowa State University discusses why there is a need to design coatings for SPME analysis that are more targeted for specific types of analytes and the rewards that can be reaped.

LC–MS and GC–MS Analysis of Honeybee Pesticides
Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) alongside gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) has been used to analyze 200 pesticides and pesticide metabolites in honeybees.
