The chemical messages that animals use to communicate can trigger a range of responses in members of the same species. The Column spoke to Jorge Saiz from the Centre of Metabolomics and Bioanalysis (CEMBIO) at the University San Pablo CEU, Spain, about his research into the chemical secretions of lizards and the role of gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) in his work. read more

SPE has long been used for the analysis of semi-volatile organics in clean matrices. Due to the unique challenges inherent with waste water matrices laboratories have predominately adhered to LLE (Liquid Liquid Extraction) protocols. Advances in packing materials and automated extraction systems have now made extractions of these matrices possible . Attend the Webinar to see the validation study using FMS TurboTrace ABN SPE system can improve the quality and increase throughput for your laboratories extractions. View the Prerecorded Webinar

FEATURES
The occurrence of disinfection byproducts in natural waters poses a health risk for humans as well as aquatic organisms. This article presents a method, which was recently developed at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona, USA, for the fast and simultaneous determination of 15 regulated and unregulated disinfection byproducts. read more

This article describes a pilot study of hives in seven geographical locations in eastern Pennsylvania that combined exposomic profiling using GC–QTOF-MS with semi-quantitative PCR identification of Nosema ceranae (a common honey bee parasite), and organoleptic identifiers of honey bee health. Chemical exposures associated with N. ceranae were screened against known honey bee biological pathways. These results offer insight into new methods that could be used to prospectively monitor honey bee health. read more
