The LCGC BLOG
Two things were surprising about some recent research we reported. First, with regard to chemically impaired groundwater quality, it may not always be the chemicals that are most worrisome for human health impacts. Second, the primary methodology we used in that work for microorganism identification, matrix-assisted laser desorption–ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), is a vastly underappreciated tool, especially outside the clinical realm in areas such as environmental monitoring.

Join us in Ames, Iowa on the campus of Iowa State University for the 20th International Symposium on Advances in Extraction Technologies (ExTech) on June 19 – 22. The symposium will include invited speakers from around the world and contributed abstracts highlighting advancements in extraction and separation technologies. Abstract submission will open on January 8, 2018 and registration will begin on February 1. For details visit www.extech2018.com
The concept of (heart-cutting) multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC) was introduced shortly after the invention of GC. In that first experiment, the term "two-stage" was used to define the multidimensional process in applications involving the heart cutting of four hydrocarbon fractions, ranging from C5 to C8. The latter were separated first on a nonpolar packed column, and then on a polar one. A rather complex combination of valves enabled two-dimensional (2D) analysis. The great potential of the approach became immediately evident.
