The LCGC Blog: HPLC Column Transfer from Fully Porous to Core–Shell Particles in Three Simple Equations
There are often times when chromatographers need to "mess about" with column dimensions and particle morphologies to improve or transfer separations. There are many online calculators to do this; however, LCGC blogger Tony Taylor thinks it's great to work through the simple math to really understand what is going on. In this instalment, he shows that this calculation, while derived from chromatographic theory, is actually very easy to use and the variables are all to hand. |

Life Cycle Risk Assessment of HPLC Instruments
What does risk assessment in the context of the life cycle of a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) instrument really mean? This instalment of "Questions of Quality" will look at problems with an operational liquid chromatograph to see if they can be picked up in the performance qualification (PQ) or prevented in the operational qualification (OQ). The relationship between PQ and OQ and the design qualification (DQ) phases of the life cycle are also explored. |

Research News: Improving LC–MS–MS Determination of Trace Estrogens in Serum
Detecting estrogens at trace concentrations in biological fluids is key to understanding their role in the induction — and treatment — of disease. There are many published methods available, with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS–MS) regarded as the most sensitive; however, commonly used sample preparation methods can limit the speed of analysis. Researchers from the University of Texas Arlington, USA, have developed a method using restricted access-media (RAM) that enables the detection of trace levels of estrogens using LC–MS–MS without liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) or solid-phase extraction (SPE). |

HPLC Column Dead Volume
A question about column dead volume: If the hold–up volume (time) is the extra–column dead volume expressed in time or volume, then what is the column dead volume and how can it be calculated? |
