Maternal death from intracranial hemorrhage
A 34-year-old pregnant woman complained of a headache at a regular prenatal visit with her family physician but two days later reported acute vaginal bleeding. She was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of potential placental abruption and was subsequently discharged to another hospital for another ultrasound evaluation. Five days later, she was readmitted to the hospital and was found unresponsive by a nurse the next day. An obstetrician diagnosed her with eclampsia and an immediate cesarean was ordered but the patient was pronounced dead later that same day. Did her family physician meet the standard-of-care?
