Glaucoma 360: Uniting research, industry, philanthropy—to find a cure for glaucoma

San FranciscoOphthalmology Times welcomes attendees and readers to the 2nd Annual Glaucoma 360, a series of three events over this weekend, uniting research, industry, and philanthropy with one mission — to find a cure for glaucoma.

Three separate events, set from Thursday, Jan. 31, to Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Palace Hotel, will focus on the "Catalyst for a Cure Gala," held last night; the "New Horizons Forum," which is today; and the "CME Symposium," which concludes the meeting on Saturday. Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for glaucoma, is presenting Glaucoma 360.

Philanthropists receive 2013 Catalyst Award

San Francisco–Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) bestowed its highest honor for 2013, The Catalyst Award, to San Francisco philanthropists Frank Stein and Paul S. May at the organization's annual Catalyst For A Cure benefit gala at the historic Palace Hotel on Thursday night. The Catalyst Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in sustaining innovative glaucoma research and education. » MORE

Original researchers continue on path of discovery, innovation

San Francisco–The first Catalyst for a Cure research team has been working together for 11 years to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in glaucoma and new therapeutic targets. The four principal investigators discussed their discoveries and how they are applying this new knowledge to impact the future of patient care. » MORE

Second Catalyst team focuses on biomarkers

San Francisco–The charge for the second Catalyst for a Cure research team is to find biomarkers for the earliest pathologic events in glaucoma onset and progression. At the Catalyst for a Cure benefit gala, the four principal scientists in the consortium outlined the importance of their project and the benefits of the Catalysts for a Cure research model, pooling together individuals from different institutions providing unique skills and knowledge. » MORE
