The current system of eyeglass manufacturing, in which semi-finished “blanks” are delivered and finished in on-site laboratories, will give way to a system in which individually designed lenses are crafted for each patient, according to Jim Sheedy, OD, PhD.
Dr. Sheedy, director of optometry research, Pacific University College of Optometry, Forest Grove, OR, predicts that “free-form” manufacturing will evolve over the next 5 to 10 years. The ability to create optics based upon specific characteristics of the patient’s eyes and face will be both a boon and a challenge, as precise measurements will be required to ensure proper performance. » More

As a result, B+L will be the leading eye health company in Argentina. Milan & Campinas, Brazil—Luxottica Group S.p.A. will acquire 100 percent of Grupo Tecnol Ltda capital, significantly strengthening the company’s presence in Brazil. The terms of the agreement were released in a statement from Luxottica earlier this month.
