Performance of the Agilent 7900 ICP-MS with UHMI for High Salt Matrix Analysis
Wim Proper, Ed McCurdy, and Junichi Takahashi, Agilent Technologies
The Agilent 7900 ICP-MS with UHMI allows ICP-MS to be used for the first time for the direct analysis of trace elements in very high matrix samples, without prior sample dilution. In this study, the 7900 ICP-MS with UHMI option was used to analyze a wide range of elements in undiluted saturated salt water and various commercially available table salts.

Determination of Major Elements in Fruit Juices Using the Agilent 4200 Microwave Pasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (MP-AES)
Phuong Truong and John Cauduro, Agilent Technologies
Major elements such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium are essential nutrients in food and the routine monitoring of the levels of these elements in fruit juices by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) is a common quality control process. With the introduction of the Agilent Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer, several of the analytical challenges of using FAAS for this application have been overcome, making it the ideal instrument for laboratories looking to transition away from FAAS to a more powerful, safer, and cost-effective technique.

Determination of Major, Minor, and Trace Elements in Rice Flour Using the 4200 Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (MP-AES)
John Cauduro, Agilent Technologies
This application describes a method for the determination of major, minor, and trace elements in rice flour with recoveries in a rice CRM of +/- 10% of the assigned value with MDLs sufficient for the analysis and excellent long term stability. The excellent analytical performance, including phosphorus which is not practical by FAAS, multi-element unattended operation, improved safety, and ease of use make the 4200 MP-AES the ideal alternative to FAAS.

Single Particle Analysis of Nanomaterials Using the Agilent 7900 ICP-MS
Sebastien Sannac, Agilent Technologies
This application note describes the suitability of the Agilent 7900 ICP-MS to characterize single Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with a size range from 10- to 100-nm. The SP-ICP-MS method described can provide size distribution, median size, number of particles, and the elemental concentration of given NP samples.

Determination of Major and Minor Elements in Geological Samples Using the 4200 Microwave Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (MP-AES)
Terrance Hettipathirana and Phil Lowenstern, Agilent Technologies
With the introduction of the 4200 MP-AES, the application range of the MP-AES has expanded to include challenging geochemical samples. The second generation 4200 MP-AES features an advanced microwave cavity and a torch designed to handle samples with high dissolved solids and with better detection limits and increased working range than FAAS. The MP-AES runs off nitrogen, eliminating expensive and hazardous gases, increasing safety, and allowing for unattended operation of the instrument, even in remote locations.

Accurate Determination of Sulfur in Biodiesel Using Isotope Dilution-Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ID-ICP-QQQ)
Lieve Balcaen, Frank Vanhaecke, Glenn Woods, and Martin Resano, Agilent Technologies
A new method is described for the determination of S in organic matrices using an Agilent 8800 ICP-QQQ operating in MS-MS mode. Interferences on S were eliminated by reacting the analyte ions with O2 and measuring the isotope-specific SO+ product ions at M + 16 amu. ICP-QQQ is able to provide enhanced interference reduction for both 32S and 34S for isotope dilution purposes by utilizing MS-MS mode. The new MS-MS method is successfully applied to the S determination in a biodiesel reference material.

Analysis of Selenoproteins in Rat Serum by Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS
Yasumi Anan, Yoshiko Hatakeyama, Maki Tokumoto, and Yasumitsu Ogra, Agilent Technologies
This application note describes the speciation of two major selenoproteins, eGPx and SelP, in rat serum by triple quadrupole ICP-MS. The ICP-QQQ is a more accurate detector than ICP-QMS as it is completely free of interference originating from the plasma source Ar and the matrix elements.

Determination of Challenging Elements in Ultrapure Semiconductor Grade Sulfuric Acid by Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS
Junichi Takahashi, Agilent Technologies
Triple quadrupole ICP-MS, when operated in MS-MS mode, eliminates problematic spectral interferences that cannot be removed with collision or reaction cells ICP-MS. This application note demonstrates the ability of the ICP-QQQ to successfully analyze Ti and other elements at trace levels in sulfuric acid, enabling the routine analysis and certification of some key analytes in high purity process chemicals.

Improvement of ICP-MS Detectability of Phosphorous and Titanium in High Purity Silicon Samples Using the Agilent 8800 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS
Junichi Takahashi, Agilent Technologies
This application note demonstrates how MS-MS mode on the Agilent 8800 ICP-QQQ is very effective from the determination of P, Ti, and other trace elements in high purity silicon matrices of different concentrations (30 ppm and 2000 ppm). While historically these analytes have been considered difficult because of intense polyatomic interferences, analysis by triple quadrupole ICP-MS allows very low background equivalent concentrations and detection limits to be realized for all elements.

Trace Level Analysis of Sulfur, Phosphorous, Silicon, and Chlorine in NMP Using the Agilent 8800 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS
Naoki Sugiyama, Agilent Technologies
N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) is a stable, water-soluble organic solvent that is widely used in the pharmaceutical, petrochemical, polymer science, and especially semiconductor industries. S, P, Si, and Cl are all challenging elements for quadrupole ICP-MS. However, the Agilent 8800 Triple Quad ICP-MS, using the mass-shift method with the unique MS-MS mode, was able to achieve low BECs for all analytes, demonstrating the flexibility and capability of ICP-QQQ in solving the most difficult challenges in ICP-MS.
