Imaging Malaria-Infected Red Blood Cells with AFM-IR

In biology, the study of intracellular structures is important and requires analytical techniques with submicrometer resolution. Atomic force microscopy-infrared (AFM-IR) spectroscopy is one technique that has the required lateral spatial resolution to observe such structures. David Perez-Guaita, PhD, at the Centre for Biospectroscopy at Monash University in Australia, is pioneering work applying AFM-IR to the study of red blood cells infected with the malaria parasite. read more

Effect of Dopants or Impurities on the Raman Spectrum of the Host Crystal

Raman spectroscopy is a convenient method for probing the chemical bonding and solid state structure of crystals, and it is sensitive to the presence of dopants, impurities, and crystal defects in the host-crystal lattice. Here is what you need to know about how a host-crystal Raman spectrum is affected by dopants and impurities. read more

Microplastic characterization by Raman imaging spectroscopy
This white paper discusses an improved method for identifying and quantifying microplastics in the environment, a growing health risk to wildlife and humans. Problems occur when microparticles below 20 microns cannot be accurately characterized using conventional methods. Review data showing how these problems are overcome by using Raman imaging spectroscopy. Read more

IR Spectral Interpretation Workshop

Your latest interpretation problem is shown in the figure presented in this quiz. Using what you have learned from the January installment of "IR Spectral Interpretation Workshop" and previous columns, determine the functional groups present from the spectrum given, and try to discover the chemical structure of this compound. Remember that the inclusion of a peak position in the table does not necessarily mean it will be useful in the structure determination. read more
