PUZZLER Stumped by a bleeding umbilicus
Stacy B Pierson, MD, and Parth Mehta, MD, MPH

THE CASE
It is a beautiful, sunny afternoon in the state of Florida. You are making your rounds in the local tertiary children's hospital when you receive a call from the emergency department (ED). You are told that a 10-day-old white male has been transferred from an outlying ED and is being admitted for further evaluation of unremitting umbilical stump bleeding despite multiple interventions.
