Vaccine Therapy, Oncolytic Viruses, and Gliomas
Despite decades of efforts to improve radiation and chemotherapy for patients with malignant gliomas, the survival of these patients has remained poor. Is Personalized Medicine Here?
Actual progress towards the goal of personalized cancer treatment has not yet quite lived up to the hopeful vision that the growth of cancer genomics gave rise to. Genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptomic analyses have revealed the astounding heterogeneity of human cancers, and it has become evident that devising validated molecular diagnostics platforms that can guide personalized treatment decisions is tremendously challenging. Here, senior author Francis Giles and colleagues review the real therapeutic and diagnostic achievements of personalized medicine; they also highlight the challenges that remain for the translation of the burgeoning genomic knowledge base to daily clinical practice.
