Scientists have raised concerns that 2–5-µm particles in parenteral drugs could decrease those products’ efficacy or cause adverse effects. Regulators and industry groups have begun to examine the issue, but consensus about the risk that these particles pose has been elusive. This article will examine why the particles could cause concern, how companies could locate and control them in their production lines, and what steps regulators are taking to study the issue.
