Overview

The science of making measurements with light—spectroscopy—has changed dramatically in the past 15 years. What was once the domain of the analytical scientist and large instruments has now moved into handheld or cell phone enabled technologies. Changes in optical and detector technologies have brought about these radical changes.

At this seminar, you will discover how developments made by Hamamatsu, a leader in photonics technology, can assist you in implementing these changes in your products. At this seminar, you will:

  • Learn how to make an appropriate spectroscopic measurement for your application
  • Understand how changes in image sensor technology have simplified the design of spectroscopic instruments
  • See how Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MOEMS) technology was used to miniaturize a spectrometer down to the size of a Lego™ brick, and find out how you can use this device in your development

Presented by Hamamatsu Corporation, this seminar will bring you presentations from the team who builds, uses, and supports these ongoing developments, so that you too can benefit from the strides made by one of the leading photonics companies in the world.

Guest speaker

Dr. Alexander Scheeline is Professor of Chemistry Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; President/Co-founder of SpectroClick Inc., a cell phone enabled spectroscopy company; and Vice-president/Co-founder of Anchor Science LLC. A native of Hollidaysburg, PA, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the direction of J. P. Walters, focusing on plasma diagnostics of bipolar pulse spark discharges. Following a National Research Council post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institute for Standards and Technology, he was an assistant professor at the University of Iowa before moving to Illinois. He served as Program Officer in Analytical and Surface Chemistry at the National Science Foundation. His research interests are in instrument development, miniature spectrometers, reactive oxygen species, oscillatory reactions, nonlinear dynamics, and noise-induced hearing loss.

Scheeline is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society of Electroanalytical Chemists, Coblentz Society, Optical Society of America, and a fellow and honorary member of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. He is one of six members of the Chemistry faculty at Illinois to teach the standard undergraduate curriculum at the Faculty of Chemistry, Vietnam National University of Science - Hanoi.
