Improving accuracy in serial dilutions using the electronic pipette

Serial dilutions are an essential component of dose response curves in drug discovery. Serial dilutions also play a major role in detection limit testing, standard curves for qPCR based assays, and calibration curves in diverse assays and instruments. Accuracy in serial dilutions is an important factor that can significantly impact results. In this study, we investigated the use of electronic pipettes for the preparation of serial dilutions. The results demonstrate that use of electronic pipette for serial dilution gives better accuracy in sample concentrations and has reduced error propagation in the highest dilutions in the series compared to mechanical pipette use. We conclude that electronic pipette is a better choice in preparation of serial dilutions. Additionally, features such as improved ergonomics, electronic mixing of samples, and the ability to pre-program pipetting protocols added significant benefits to the use of electronic pipettes in preparation of serial dilutions.
